I was skeptical about trying a Brugmansia. They aren’t known for surviving in southern Illinois, and growing from seedlings or cuttings can take two or three years to pay off. But when I saw this monstrosity I decided to give it a go.
I brought it into the witch’s garden and the weather turned foul. The winds were heavy. We even had some hail in there. It rained incessantly for two weeks. The Brugmansia’s leaves are long and wide and not used to being whipped around. They broke under their own weight, and the plant lost most of its larger leaves.
Then a couple of days ago I noticed this bloom pod and a couple of others popping out on top. A few leaves turned yellow and dropped off, but otherwise it’s looking good. The bloom pods are starting to turn, as Brugmansia flowers hang down.
Hopefully my first real night scent will be arriving any day now.
