The Cliffs of Moher in county Clare, Ireland are certainly breathtaking. Stretching on for five miles, they rise from between 300 and 700 feet above the Atlantic Ocean, a sheer drop with every year seeing more than one person falling to their death. Still others are stranded trying to climb up, or down the precipitous stone face.
Perhaps they’re following in the boots of the Dread Pirate Robert, who famously climbed the Cliffs of Moher in The Princess Bride, or as they were known in the film, the cliffs of insanity.
Visited by about a million people per year, you’ll need to walk a bit to find yourself alone. For those coming from the U.S., the cliffs are often one of the first stops, being an easy drive from Shannon Airport. Staying in Doolin, one of the nearest villages to the cliffs makes for a stress free first day, and a relatively traffic free way to learn the peculiarities of driving in Ireland, as you wind through the countryside.
