Old Sheldon Church Ruins, ravaged by war, haunted by a saddened mother

The ruins of old Sheldon Church, in Beaufort County, South Carolina is one of the more lovely abandoned places you can find. Destroyed once by the British in the American Revolution, and ravaged from General Sherman in his march to the sea in the Civil War, the chapel, in its moss draped surroundings has seen hard times. Like a Greek temple, transplanted to the South Carolina low country, it offers a respite from the heat, from the modern era.

According to legend, a lady in a simple brown dress still watches over her child’s grave, and it’s said that when you pass near the grave, you’re overcome by sorrow.
