Description
Those who have read The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving will remember that the goal of Ichabod Crane when being pursued by the Headless Horseman was the Old Dutch Church. Ichabod didn’t quite make it, meeting his fate at the bridge below. The Old Dutch Church is still standing, overlooking the Pocantico River in Sleepy Hollow.
The legend itself was inspired by an optical illusion Irving experienced one afternoon in the Old Dutch Church. Looking out the window he thought he saw a face hovering on a tombstone, which turned out to be the marker for who was to become Katrina Van Tassell.
