It is believed that Roman gladiators wore wreaths of Gladiolus as protection in combat. One would hope that their fighting skills were more effective than relying on a flower to stop a sword.
Gladiolus take their name from the Latin, where it in fact meant sword. It’s still known as a sword lilly in some places.
As part of a love spell, Gladiolus are thought to be effective because like a sword, they pierce the heart of your intended.
Which is how they came to be in the Witch’s Garden. The gardener bought some, because she thinks they’re pretty and she loves pretty things. And I love that about her.
I also love the bold color they brought to the front of the house. Before falling over.
