As far as I know, nobody ever accused H.P. Lovecraft of being an optimist.

He’s right of course. The world is indeed one big cosmic joke. We feel like we have control, but it doesn’t take long to realize we’re the butt of the joke. It’s that moment of realization that gave Lovecraft’s stories their bone-chilling horror. Too late to turn back, too late to change your mind. That sense of being in control gives way to the realization that you’re about to enter a wholly different world than the one you see on the surface.
