Thankfully we don’t. His concept of love and desire was over the top. Those employed by him as domestic servants spoke of horrifying sexual abuse, seemingly everywhere he went. Even his fellow prisoners in the asylum complained of his tendencies.

But occasionally he hit a nail on the head. For many, pain does indeed lead to pleasure. It’s a white hot passion which is a bit too hot for many. But not for all of us. Even if we don’t blaze with the intensity of de Sade.
