According to Suzanne L. Barnett, writing in her book Romantic Paganism: The Politics of Ecstasy in the Shelley Circle, paganism to the romantic poets of the Byronic/Shelley ilk meant more than a rejection of contemporary Christianity, or the worship of ancient gods.
