Description
It’s long been debated whether Poe wrote these lines. The original poem hung on the wall of Washington Tavern in Lowell, Massachusetts, where as the story goes, Poe wrote it to pay his bar tab.
Fill with mingled cream and amber
I will drain that glass again.
Such hilarious visions clamber
Through the chamber of my brain —
Quaintest thoughts — queerest fancies
Come to life and fade away;
What care I how time advances?
I am drinking ale today
Poe was a nasty drunk, with little capacity. There are precious few stories of him in a good mood whilst drinking. But then again, perhaps when bellied up to the bar, a side of him came out that never found its way into any official biography. And perhaps over indulgence in ale might account for the quality of the poem, which doesn’t meet Poe’s usual high standards.
Regardless, it make for a nice shirt.
